Definition
Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure during which a long endoscope is used to examine the rectum and colon from the distal rectum to the ileocecal valve. Direct visualization of the bowel is done following thorough bowel cleansing and inflation with air. The scope has multiple channels which permit biopsy, resection, and tattooing of concerning lesions for easy identification during follow-up or surgery.
