Definition

Necrotizing stromal keratitis is a condition characterized by the presence of severe inflammation in the corneal tissue and subsequent damage leading to destruction of the corneal tissue, necrosis, and corneal melting seen in response to an inflammatory or infectious process. In the more severe forms, the condition can progress to corneal abscess formation (a condition that is referred as suppurative keratitis), thinning, and perforation.

Etiology

A variety of pathologic processes could present as necrotizing keratitis. The major etiologies can be classified into one of these categories:

    Infectious: a wide spectrum of infectious agents including bacterial, viral, fungal, and protozoal infections of the cornea could be associated with corneal ulceration and necrotizing keratitis.
