In medieval times, the northern Bavarian city of Nürnberg was the residence of famous scholars such as Dürer, Stoss and Regiomontanus {see planets  (3104),  (6106), and  (9307), respectively}. This minor planet is being named on the occasion of the inauguration of a new 0.6-m telescope at the Niirnberg Observatory in Oct. 2004. (M 52766)

The name was suggested by E. Wunder.
