Georg von Neumayer (1826–1909), German geophysicist and hydrographer, was the founder of the German Hydrographic Office. Neumayer is known as an outstanding Antarctic researcher, and he played a major role in instituting the International Polar Year. His name was given to the German Antarctic station in 1981.
