Discovered 1916 Apr. 3 by S. I. Belyavskij at Simeis.

Named in honor of the Russian astronomer Johann Oskar Backlund (1846–1916). Backlund, who was born in Sweden, worked on the orbits of comets and especially on comet Encke. (H 84)

Backlund is also honored by a lunar crater.
