Discovered 1912 Feb. 11 by A. Massinger at Heidelberg.
Named after the country of Japan where this planet was discovered accidently (by Hirayama, Tokyo) twice in 1900 and 1908, respectively. (AN 196, 140 (1913))
The planet was first photographed on March 3, 1900 by S. Hirayama under the assistance of K. Toda. K. Saotome computed first circular elements for 1900 FE. This is the first minor planet discovered in Japan. Nippon is the official transliteration of Japan. (K. Tomita).
