Named for a sea nymph, one of the Nereids, whom sailors invoked during storms. (H 11)

Named (AN 55, 235 (1861)) by R. Main, Oxford Observatory, president of the Royal Astronomical Society, who had the occasion to present the Gold Medal of the R AS to the discoverer for his planetary discoveries.
