(666) Desdemona

Reference work entry

Discovered 1908 July 23 by A. Kopff at Heidelberg.

Named for the wife of Othello in William Shakespeare’s {see planet  (2985)} tragedy (written 1604). (H 68)

The naming might be influenced by the two letters of the provisional designation 1908 DM. See also the remarks to planet  (579). The name Desdemona has also been given to the satellite Uranus X, discovered 1986 by the Voyager 2 spacecraft.
