Discovered 1905 Apr. 3 by M. F. Wolf at Heidelberg.

Named for the daughter of Herod Antipas who was given the head of John the Baptist as a reward for her dancing. She is the leading figure in the opera Salome (1905) by the German composer Richard Strauss (1864–1949) {see planet  (5039)}, which is based on the romance by the Irish-born writer Oscar Wilde (1854–1900).
