Dictionary of Minor Planet Names

1982 ST. Discovered 1982 Sept. 19 by E. F. Helin at Palomar.

Named in honor of Edward C. Stone for his distinguished achievements in expanding the frontiers of robotic space flight, planetary exploration, interplanetary science and the remote sensing of the earth. While highly respected for his scientific contributions, he has also achieved outstanding success as director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, primarily through his perspicacity and an approach to management that blends diverse individuals and ideas into a productive organization. He is also Morrison professor of physics and a vice president at the California Institute of Technology. Among his many awards and honors he received the National Medal of Science. (M 26425)
