Named in honor of Fred Franklin (1932– ), astronomer in the Planetary Sciences division of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Franklin’s researches have covered chaos in the solar system, the rings of Saturn, and mutual phenomena of planetary satellites. (M 22502)

Name proposed by members of the Planetary Sciences division, the identifications for this object having been made by B. G. Marsden.
