Discovered 1895 Oct. 13 by M. F. Wolf at Heidelberg.
Named for a daughter of Idmon, a dyer. She was so skillful in weaving that she challenged Athena {see planet (881)} to a weaving contest. When Athena ripped the cloth, Arachne hanged herself and was changed into a spider. (Z 27)
