Named in honor of Henri Poincaré (1854–1912), distinguished French mathematician and celestial mechanician, contributor to the theory of functions, modern algebra, algebraic topology, number theory, and Les méthodes nouvelles de la mécanique céleste. (M 4420) Poincaré is also honored by a lunar crater.
