Named in honor of Irja Klemola, formerly rector of a school in Turku, one of the founders and for many years secretary of the society Turun Ursa for amateur astronomers; she also frequently participated in the minor planet program at the Turku Observatory. This planet also honors Arnold R. Klemola, currently in charge of the proper-motion program at the Lick Observatory, also well known for his astrometric observations of comets and minor planets.
