Multipotent cells capable of forming bone, cartilage, fat, connective tissue, and muscle, first identified as a stromal population in the bone marrow, distinct from hematopoietic stem cells. Controversy exists in the literature regarding the multipotency of these cells, so the term mesenchymal stromal cells is gaining favor over the term mesenchymal stem cells.
