Zusammenfassung

Das 1927 erschienene Stück basiert auf Plänen und Skizzen zu einem ‚Galgei‘-Projekt, die in die Jahre 1918 bis 1921 zurückgehen und die Auswechselbarkeit des Menschen in der modernen Industriegesellschaft zum Thema haben. Die Fassung von 1926 (UA 25. September, Darmstadt und Düsseldorf) verlegt das Geschehen in ein (fiktives, an R. Kipling orientiertes) Indien und betont so das Modellhafte des Dargestellten.
