Das umfangreiche dramatische Schaffen des Autors umfasst hauptsächlich historische Dramen und erstreckt sich – abgesehen von einem Dutzend zu Lebzeiten Rollands ungedruckt gebliebener Jugenddramen, darunter das postum erschienene Drama Savonarole (1955, Savonarola) – über die Jahre zwischen 1897 und 1939.
