Der erstmals 1852 veröffentlichte historische Roman erzählt die Ereignisse des ausgehenden 17. und des 18. Jh.s aus der Perspektive der Privatperson Henry Esmond. Zugleich entfaltet er ein lebendiges Panorama der verschiedenen religiösen und politischen Meinungen, der subversiven und militärischen Auseinandersetzungen und der schillernden historischen Gestalten der Zeit von Königin Anne.
