Die Erstpublikation des „einflußreichsten Kunstkritikers des 20. Jahrhunderts“ (K. Lüdeking) entstand im Spannungsfeld der politischen Systeme der 1930er Jahre und erschien 1939. In vier großen Abschnitten werden die Fragen nach den Zusammenhängen von Avantgarde und Kitsch sowie deren historischer und gesellschaftlicher Stellung abgehandelt.
