Saint-Simon’s social theory deeply influenced key figures in the development of the social sciences and socialism from Emile Durkheim and Auguste Comte to Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. The Saint-Simonian movement inspired the creation of intentional communities and the rise of the French cooperative-based socialism. His emphasis on industrialism and administrative efficiency as the key to progress and social justice had a great influence on the development of industrial public policies.

Basic Biographical Information

Claude-Henri de Rouvroy, Comte de Saint-Simon, was born in Paris, on October 17, 1760. A philosopher and social reformer belonging to a French aristocratic family, he is a distant cousin of Louis de Rouvroy, Duc de Saint-Simon, famous for his memoirs on the reign of Louis XIV.
