Definitions
- Rural and Urban:

Etymologically “rural” comes from Latin “ruralis” “of the countryside,” from rus (genitive ruris) “open land, country.” “Urban” from Latin “urbanus” “of or pertaining to a city or city life,” from urbs (genitive urbis) “city, walled town” (Etymological Dictionary 2019).
What is defined as urban and rural varies however over time and space. The UN assumes that urban areas usually provide higher standard of living than rural areas, although admitting that this distinction has become blurred in many industrialized countries and the concentration of population might be a better standard measure (United Nations 2017b).
