Definition

Women’s health and reproduction considers the interrelationship between gender inequality, women’s health, and reproductive health.

Introduction

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 [UNSDG5] commits to achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Indicators of this include ending all types of discrimination against women and girls everywhere; eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls; eliminating harmful practices such as child married, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation; and ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (United Nations [UN] 2017). Other rights also relate to women having full access to economic and public life (UN 2017). UN Women (2018) argues that gender equality is the key to achieving all 17 of the UNSDGs. This demonstrates how crucial it is to consider women’s health in relation to global drivers to eradicate gender inequality.
