Definition

Myeloproliferative neoplasms, including chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and polycythemia vera (PV), may progress from a steady-state phase (chronic phase) with sufficient production of mature blood cells to an accelerated phase with deterioration of hematologic blood parameters and/or organomegaly. Chronic and accelerated phase may be followed by a blast phase with more than 20% immature blasts in the blood or bone marrow. Transition from chronic to accelerated and blast phase, respectively, is defined by varying parameters, which according to WHO (Vardiman et al. 2017) are summarized in Table 1.
