Abstract
Hematuria is a common problem caused by numerous diseases such as infection, urolithiasis, and increasingly malignancy. The finding can be burdensome to the patient and clinician alike due to the associated morbidities and challenges in diagnosing potentially life-threatening etiologies. A lack of a consensus on guidelines for evaluation persists which has complicated the physician’s decision-making process. This chapter reviews the current literature and seeks to highlight the current trends in diagnosis and outcomes particularly in critically ill cancer patients and special patient populations. Conclusively, prospective studies are needed to evaluate to streamline and update current guidelines for hematuria. Also, a structured and reflexive protocol across the system level will address the disparities and outcomes in certain demographic populations.
