Definition
Drought is below-average precipitation in an area which leads to prolonged shortages of water supply.
Introduction
Drought, as a form of natural disaster, damages the quality of agricultural land and exerts a negative effect on food production, contributing to the poverty of farmers. Coping strategies are very important for the better livelihood of people who depend on agricultural production. This article intends to explore the devastating impact of droughts on the agricultural sector and in particular the coping strategies of farmers in the northwestern part of Bangladesh.
Planning Commission (2009) points out that the agricultural sector is key to ensuring food security and is a significant contributor to the GDP (gross domestic product) of Bangladesh. The sector contributes nearly 19.29% of the total GDP and provides employment to 65% of the total labor force (Islam 2016).
