Definition
The cradle to cradle (C2C) concept aims at the continuous innovation of human development regarding environmental, economic, and social issues, as well as of the design of products and services, through an eco-effective comprehensive approach that optimizes positive features from materials and processes. C2C promotes sustainability by upcycling materials into nutrients to both the biological and technical cycles, using energy from renewable sources, and improving the resilience and diversity of technological and social systems (McDonough and Braungart 2002).
