Definitions
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), “Food loss and food waste refer to the decrease of food in subsequent stages of the food supply chain (FSC) intended for human consumption. Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial production down to final household consumption”. Nevertheless, several food waste-related terms and definitions can be found in the literature reflecting the lack of consensus on terminology and definitions on food waste. Different terms are used to refer to food that is wasted or removed from the FSC (e.g., food waste, food wastage, food losses, food losses and waste, food spoilage), and, according to the specific context in which they are used, different terms may have the same definition, or the same term may have different definitions.
