Abstract

This chapter presents examples of video teleconferencing innovations in enhancing education, services, and workforce development in the Pacific world region. It further describes how technology can reconnect people, disseminate expertise, provide accessibility, promote fairness and justice, and help fulfill personal journeys to reconnect one’s past, present, and future. The chapter is developed around personal stories of the authors and organized around three key lessons learned from academic psychiatry practice with a Pacific/global focus (1) that relationships are foundational, and great international friendships transcend time, space, and generation; (2) that providers should strive to innovate locally and serve globally; and (3) that with searching one’s soul, there will always be a calling and an opportunity to participate in global mental healthcare.
