Overview
Among developing Asian countries, Thailand is unusual in having conducted a series of national surveys over the last three decades that focus on older persons and their social, economic, and health situations (Teerawichitchainan and Knodel 2015). To date (2019), there are at least ten relatively large-scale surveys focusing on older Thais. Some were carried out by academics, while others were conducted by government agencies. All but one surveys are cross-sectional in nature.
The first aging survey entitled Socio-Economic Consequences of the Aging Population in Thailand (SECAPT) was conducted in 1986 by the Institute of Population Studies (now known as the College of Population Studies), Chulalongkorn University (Chayovan et al. 1988).
