Personal care for older people refers to hands-on assistance and help with the basic but essential activities of life such as bathing, dressing, using the toilet, and eating. These activities, known as activities of daily living (ADLs), are essential to maintaining people’s personal hygiene, nutrition, and overall quality of life. A distinctive feature of most personal care tasks is the involvement of touching a person’s body in the delivery of help and assistance.
Personal care is conceptually distinguished from domestic help. The latter refers to assistance with routine domestic tasks such as shopping, cooking, housekeeping, doing laundry, taking medication, and managing finances, which are also known as instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).
