Definition

Cognitive training is targeted intervention aimed at improving specific mental abilities such as memory, attention, speed of processing, or executive function. Two major types of cognitive training are process-based, which includes repeated practice of targeted exercises, and strategy-based, which involves learning strategies and techniques.

Overview

Cognitive training is one particular type of cognitive intervention designed to improve core abilities within targeted domains such as attention, speed of processing (See “Speed of Processing”), executive function, or memory (See “Cognitive Process”). There are two major types of cognitive training: process- and strategy-based (Lustig et al. 2009). Process-based techniques target improving specific cognitive domains through repeated practice or drills of cognitive exercises.
