Definition

Broadly, leisure activities can be defined as activities that individuals take part in during free time, such as exercise and socializing (Pressman et al. 2009). Kleiber and Nimrod (2009) expanded this broad definition by summarizing that leisure activities are preferred and enjoyable activities that an individual participates in one’s free time, and engaging in leisure activities has the potential to improve the quality of life. Other scholars defined leisure through time, activity, and experience (Hurd and Anderson 2011): First of all, time free from the necessity to labor for a livelihood, such as work; secondly, activities that free an individual from one’s obligations, and finally, experience that is pleasant – all these three components are critical.
