Historical Background

Platelet activating factor-acetylhydrolases (PAF-AH) (EC are essentially phospholipase A 2 isoenzymes (Group VII and VIII) catalyzing the hydrolysis of short chain acyl group at the second position of phospholipids. An important bioactive lipid that led to the discovery of PAF-AH is platelet-activating factor (PAF), a potent proinflammatory lipid, whose discovery in the early 1970s was a breakthrough that opened a new dimension to the role of phospholipids, until then they were only considered as structural constituents of biological membranes/lipoproteins or at the most precursor for the biologically active phosphoinositides and eicosanoids (Hanahan 1986; Prescott et al. 2000).
