Definition
Enteric cyst is unilocular congenital cyst lined with different types of enteric epithelial cells, like parietal and chief cells of stomach, small and large intestinal epithelial cells, and also squamous and ciliated columnar cells. It is formed during the third and fourth week of intrauterine life when the embryonic endoderm and notochord fuse and separate. If adhesions between those two structures persist during the separation, cysts and thoracic or vertebral malformations will develop. Mediastinal enteric cyst may enlarge and produce airway obstruction, caught, pain, and dysphagia.

Rare but a real incidence is not known.
Age
Any age. Most frequently found in infancy or childhood.
Sex
Male predominance.
Site
Mediastinum (usually right posterior mediastinum in retrocardiac position).
Treatment
Surgery and percutaneous needle aspiration.
