Description

Discourse assessment is used in clinical practice and research and can be applied across the lifespan with typical populations as well as clinical populations that present with speech, language, and/or cognitive impairments. Discourse assessment, also called language sampling when used in early childhood, is thought to represent the intersection of all aspects of language (including syntax, semantics, and pragmatics), cognition, and contextual variables (Cannizzaro and Coelho 2013; Cherney et al. 1998; Miller 1981). The results of a completed discourse assessment are recognized as a more ecologically valid representation of a client’s/patient’s everyday performance abilities than what may be evident from the results of standardized language and cognition testing alone (Coelho 1999; Coelho et al. 2005; Murray and Clark 2015).
