Proposed Mechanism(s) of Action
Blocks serotonin 2A receptors and the serotonin reuptake mechanism. The former mechanism of action theoretically underlies its hypnotic effects.
Indication
Depression.
Off-Label Use
Insomnia and anxiety.
Side Effects
Serious
(All rare) priapism, seizures, induction of mania, and suicidal ideation (although short-term studies do not support this warning compared to placebo after age 24).
Common
Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, edema, hypotension, tremor, syncope, rare bradycardia, and rash.
