This agent appears to be a mild to moderate NMDA receptor antagonism, binding more frequently to the NMDA receptor cation channels. Via a similar action, it appears to modulate excessive glutamate release in both Alzheimer’s disease and, theoretically, post-CNS trauma.
Indication
Moderate to severe Alzheimer’s dementia
Off-Label Use
Mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia, memory disorders in other conditions, mild cognitive impairment, and chronic pain
Side Effects
Dizziness, confusion, headache, constipation, cough, hypertension, and somnolence
