Proposed Mechanism(s) of Action
Carbamazepine is a use-dependent blocker of voltage-sensitive sodium channels; it interacts with the open channel conformation of voltage-sensitive sodium channels; it interacts at alpha pore-forming subunit of voltage-sensitive sodium channels, and it inhibits release of glutamate.
Indication
Complex partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, mixed seizure patterns, bipolar mania, restless legs syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia pain, and intravenous carbamazepine (Orphan).
Off-Label Use
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia, psychosis, schizophrenia, and personality disorders.
