Definition

Military discharge refers to an official release from military service. In the United States, a military discharge entails two phases. The first phase is End of Active Service (EAS), wherein a service member is released from permanent active duty. The service member may elect to join an established National Guard or Reserve unit or the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). While members of National Guard and Reserve units are required to report for regularly scheduled training exercises and may be deployed with said unit, members of the IRR are simply required to keep their contact information current and may be joined to an existing unit and deployed with that unit based on military necessity. Either type reserve capacity lasts until the stated term of service is concluded for enlisted personnel or until the service member resigns his or her commission for commissioned officers.
