The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) Processing Speed Index (PSI; formerly Processing Speed Quotient [PSQ]) was a new feature added to the third version of the WPPSI series and revised for the latest edition. The PSI was historically a composite score derived from subtests including Coding and Symbol Search. These subtests were initially modified from other Wechsler tests for use with younger children. The WPPSI-IV PSI has been revised with new subtests to improve utility with young children. Current processing speed subtests include Bug Search, Cancellation, and Animal Coding. Bug Search, a newly developed WPPSI-IV subtest, requires the child to match visual stimuli and is designed to be analogous to Symbol Search from the previous edition.
