The branch of research that examines how an individual’s genetic code will affect their reaction to drugs.
Introduction
The field of pharmacogenetics is concerned with improving patient outcomes and response to drug treatment(s). To this end, research efforts in this field have many aims: to identify genetic variants that alter an individual’s response to pharmacological agents, to determine the population frequency of identified polymorphisms, and to search for safer or more effective treatments/doses. The ultimate goal of pharmacogenetics is to predict a patient’s response to a treatment based on genetic differences, thereby improving success and reducing adverse outcomes (Spear et al. 2001).
