Introduction
The archaeology of the Andes is recognized worldwide for the complexity of the sociohistorical developments that have occurred in the region and for the wealth and monumental nature of its archaeological record. This has led researchers to pay great attention to study of the great architectural complexes of the Andes and to a series of elements of material culture which can be catalogued as art, such as ceramics and metalworking. Although petroglyphs are a recurrent material record in the Andes, they have not been studied in the same depth as other material evidence from the pre-Hispanic era. An overview of Andean petroglyphs is realized in this entry.
Definition
Petroglyphs are a particular type of rock art, characterized by the production of images on rock supports through extraction of the surface material of the rock by engraving, scraping, and/or incision. These extractions create lines or areas to depict specific images which make up the motifs of Andean petroglyphs....
