Rokitansky (Fig. 1) was one of the towering figures in the history of pathological anatomy. He was born as Karl Rokitansky on the 19th of February 1804 in Königgrätz (today Hradec Králové, Bohemia, Czech Republic). He studied in Prague and Vienna and started his career in the morgue of the Allgemeine Krankenhaus in Vienna in 1827. Two years after his graduation in 1828, he became a paid assistant. In the following years, his “star rose on the skyline of medicine.”
