Network densification is the process of deploying more cells during the development of wireless communication industry, which is by far the greatest contributor to the evolution of network capacity.

Historical Background

The 1970s witnessed the emergence of the first-generation cellular network. Since then, wireless communications have developed into one of the largest sectors of the telecommunications industry and improved humans’ living experience in nearly every aspect. It is worth noting that there were only 10 million subscribers in 1990, mostly using analog FM technology (Rappaport et al., 2002). In 2017, the 5 billion mobile subscriber milestone was reached, and a further 620 million subscribers will be added by 2020, reaching almost three quarters of the global population (GSMA Intelegence, 2017).
