Overview
The temporal lobes are the part of the brain that, among other functions, organizes sensory input, auditory perception, speech production, as well as memory association and formation. Damage to the temporal lobes, such as through a stroke or seizure, can lead to an inability to speak or understand language, difficulty hearing or perceiving sound, as well as the development of anxiety disorders, aggression, hallucinations, and impaired memory. Research on temporal lobes has been influenced greatly by studies of temporal lobe epilepsy, which has focused on interventions and understanding the broader effects of temporal lobe dysfunction. Some types of dysfunctions associated with temporal lobes, such as temporal lobe epilepsy, are recognizable typically after the first decade of life, which reveals important issues relating to the adolescent period.
