Definition

The historical evolution of the party system in Chile, questions the theoretical conditions that favor the institutionalization of parties and democracy. Persistent conditions that seem unfavorable, are compensated by lessons learned by the elites and the parties, which currently allow the Chilean system to be recognized as one of the most politically developed in the Region.

Introduction

At the Latin American level, the party system in Chile stands out due to its institutionalization and stability in a context of high fragmentation and polarization. This unusual combination stems from a historical process of State formation based on the strengthening of presidential power over the endemic conflict of the Chilean political elite.
