Definition
Infundibular cysts are slowly growing, round, dermal, or subcutaneous tumors that can reach up to 1–5 cm. Giant and multilocular forms are also seen. They are usually located in the mid or lower dermis. Most of them develop on hair-bearing areas spontaneously, and these are related to the follicular infundibulum. Epidermal cysts developing in nonfollicular regions like palms and soles can be explained by traumatic implantation of epidermis into the dermis or subcutis. Congenital cysts of the midline scalp are also caused by implantation. Cysts can develop on chronic dermabrasion areas or healed herpes zoster sites. They are usually one or a few in a patient, but there can be numerous cysts in Gardner’s syndrome. Cysts can be infected and rupture. Anaerobes are predominant organisms in the cysts of genital and perianal regions.
