Definition

Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is characterized by a neoplastic proliferation of small, uniform, dyscohesive cells that expands at least 50% of one terminal ductal-lobular unit (TDLU). Although the first pictures of “atypical proliferation of acinar cells” were published in 1919 by Ewing, the term LCIS was introduced in 1941 by Foote and Stewart to describe the histological hallmarks of this lesion within breast lobules. The description was restricted to a well-developed example of classic LCIS (LCIS-C) as an established histopathological entity. In 1985, Dupont and Page described the earlier stages of this lesion, such as atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH). The term lobular neoplasia (LN) denotes the full spectrum of proliferation of the characteristic “lobular” cells in acini with frequent coexistence of ALH and LCIS (Haagensen et al. 1978).
