Definition

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a basaloid tumor composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells arranged in variable morphologic configurations, including tubular, cribriform, and solid patterns (El-Naggar and Huvos 2005). Adenoid cystic carcinoma manifests as a slowly growing mass often accompanied by pain and, in some cases, by facial paralysis (Rousseau and Badoual 2010). It is a locally aggressive tumor having relentless clinical course and usually a fatal outcome (El-Naggar and Huvos 2005).
