M. Lynne Cooper is Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Missouri Columbia. She is a social-personality psychologist whose research focuses broadly on risk-taking and adjustment among adolescents and young adults, with particular emphasis on (1) elucidating the roles of personality, motivation, and emotion-regulation in risk-taking, and (2) understanding the sources of covariation among risky behaviors, especially between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviors.

Early Life and Educational Background

Cooper was born in Louisville, KY, on September 20, 1950. She received a BA in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1974, and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from California State University, San Jose, in 1978. She earned her PhD in social/personality psychology in 1987 from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she was co-mentored by Elliot Aronson and David Harrington.
